MapIn 1804, Charbonneau was hired to guide Lewis & Clark because of his knowledge of the country where he traded. He was asked to bring Sacagawea and her baby boy, Jean Baptiste, along so it would show the peaceful nature of the expedition. Also, it would be useful to have someone who spoke the Native languages and was familiar with more than one tribe. She became a Native translator and negotiator for Lewis & Clark.
