University of Illinois Extension Peoria County is pleased to offer the 4-H School Enrichment Embryology in the Classroom program to area teachers. This program is designed to provide elementary and high school teachers with knowledge and resources on the chicken’s egg, its importance to man, and its role in reproduction of the species. By using supplies provided by the University of Illinois Extension and your own supplemental resources, your students can learn about incubation and embryonic development while enhancing programs in science, language arts, mathematics, social studies and art.

There will be one Embryology session offered in the spring of 2020. Available equipment is limited and openings are filled on a first come fist served basis. A completed registration form must be turned in to the Extension office to reserve a spot.

  • Tuesday, April 7: (4:30 - 5:00 pm) Mandatory Teacher Orientation/ Training & equipment pick-up at the Extension office
  • Monday, April 20: Egg pick-up at the Extension office between 1:00 - 4:00 pm or Tuesday, April 21 between 8:00 am - 4:30 pm
  • Tuesday, April 21: Set eggs / Day 1
  • Monday, May 11: Chicks hatch / Day 21
  • Friday, May 15: Return hatched chicks and equipment to Extension office between 8:00 am - 4:30 pm

U of I Extension provides:
• Teachers Training / Orientation
• Incubator
• Egg Turner
• A variety of support materials for your classroom
• Chick Feed
• Cheese Cloth for incubator
• Eggs ($7 per dozen)
• Home for hatched chicks
• Assistance throughout the incubation period with any concerns or questions

Teachers are expected to:
• Attend the Embryology Training provided by University of Illinois Extension (receive equipment at training).
• Pick up and pay for eggs at Extension office on designated date
• Return all equipment in the same condition it was loaned out (clean and with all parts) on the designated date
• Return hatched chicks on designated date
• Provide classroom enrollment data
• Provide a heat lamp and box for the hatched chicks
