Come and take a free class in the Demonstration Garden at McHenry County College with the U of I Extension Master Gardener volunteers.  The MCC Demonstration Garden, 8900 U.S. Route 14, Crystal Lake, (west of Building E) is a half-acre hidden gem and a peaceful respite.  The master gardeners will give a brief presentation on various gardening topics and provide useful how-to tips.

Each monthly session begins at 1 p.m. and lasts about an hour.  Sessions are held on Sunday, July 19; Sunday August 16; and Sunday, September 20.  Master gardener volunteers will teach you the “how, what and where” of each topic.  These family-friendly sessions are free and suitable for all age groups.

Dates and topics include:

July 19: Composting Two Ways.  A compost bin is an eco-friendly way to use your kitchen vegetable scraps to fertilize your gardens.  Learn how to start a vermicomposting container with your kids.

August 16: Bugs, Good and Bad.  Discover how “good” insects help pollinate your flowers and vegetables and which “bad” insects eat your plants.

September 20: Seed Gathering.  Understand the basics of collecting seed from your garden or wild prairie plants.  Learn the difference between open pollinated and hybrid plants and which will grow true to its parent plant.  Collected seeds can be a money-saving way to start plants each new season.
