The Junior Master Gardener program is an international youth gardening program of the university cooperative Extension network. JMG engages children in novel, “hands-on” group and individual learning experiences that provide a love of gardening, develop an appreciation for the environment, and cultivate the mind. JMG also inspires youths to be of service to others through service learning and leadership development projects, and rewards them with certification and recognition.
Through this program, we plan to teach youth in our community about the entire growing cycle including starting the plants from seed, transplanting the seedlings, and harvesting the final crop. We will also teach them about soil properties, nutrient needs of crops, importance of weed and pest control, and other growing topics. We plan to utilize kitchen facilities at John Wood to teach the kids how to cook with the food that they have grown.
This program is open to youth ages 9 - 12. The cost is $20. Scholarships are available.
