Clark County 4-H'ers ages 8-13 (beginner) and 14+ (advanced) are invited to sign up for the local public speaking contest.

Date:  Saturday, February 26, 2022 (register online by February 21)

Time:  9:00 a.m.

Location: 4-H Clubhouse, 507 Locust Street, Marshall, IL

  • Participating youth must be 8 years of age on or before September 1, 2021.  Participating youth turning 14 years of age on or before April 30, 2022, must enroll as advanced.
  • Members need to enroll in the Public Speaking project at 4HOnline. Enrollment in the Public Presentation project is required to participate in this section.

4-H State Competition: Youth must be selected in a local county 4-H contest to advance to the state contest.  Each county is allowed three entries in the state contest. The entries may come from any of the four divisions.  Each youth may only compete in up to one individual division and one group division in the state contest. April 30, 2022, in Champaign. The deadline for submission to the State is April 8, 2022.

 

Participants can enter into one of the following categories:

 

FORMAL SPEECH | Self-Written | Notes are Allowed| No Props | Individual

Formal speeches share the presenter’s own unique view intended to motivate, persuade, or inform an audience and may include a call to action. Topic of your choice. Beginner: 2-4 minutes.  Advanced: 4-6 minutes.

 

ILLUSTRATED SPEECH | Self-written | Notes allowed |Individual

An illustrated speech may be used to inform or persuade/motivate the audience using a visual aid. visual aides may be 2D, 3D, or digital, may include audience participation. Digital visual aides must be stored on USB flash drive.   Beginner: 2-4 minutes.  Advanced: 4-6 minutes.

 

ORIGINAL WORKS

All original works must be written by the presenter (s).  The manuscript must be submitted prior to the state to be eligible for an award.  May be presented individually or as a two-person team.  The presentation may be designed for TV, radio, or online media.  Must be presented live.  Props and costumes are allowed.  4-6 Minutes.

Types of entries Prose & Short Story, Poetry, Broadcast Media Program, theatrical, Combined Elements (combine any number of the above elements along with other creative presentation forms.)

ORAL INTERPRETATION

All presentations in this division must be published works.  Manuscript/transcripts must be submitted prior to the state event to be eligible for an award.  May be presented individually or as a two-person team. Props and costumes allowed. 4-6 minutes.  Types of entries include Prose & Short Story, Poetry, theatrical Interpretation, published speech recitation (present an excerpt from a spoken presentation delivered by a public figure such as Winston Churchill, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., or Maya Angelou).  Combined Elements (combine any number of the above elements along with other creative presentation forms).
