Money Mentor Volunteer Position Description

Thank you for your interest in the Money Mentors program. Currently, we are looking for Money Mentor Volunteers who live or work in Livingston, McLean, and Woodford counties.

Our next training will be taught virtually and will include both self-directed work on the Learn @ Illinois Extension platform and class discussions online using Zoom.  Each week there will be homework in the form of activities, readings, and online discussions. Assistance is available for anyone who is not familiar or comfortable with Zoom meetings or online coursework.

The next training will begin April 28!

Description: Money Mentor volunteers build financial capacity in our local communities by providing financial education and coaching to individuals. Mentoring consists of working one-on-one with people who have asked for help with their personal finances and community outreach through displays, community talks, or other projects.

Requirements: Money Mentor volunteers receive approximately 30 hours of training in money management, financial mentoring, and community resources. Opportunities are provided during training to apply financial knowledge to case examples and to practice mentoring skills. An application, interview, and background check are required before being admitted into the program. A volunteer application will be emailed to you when your registration is received. Following the training, each volunteer agrees to complete 30 volunteer hours annually in financial mentoring and community outreach. During the year, 12 hours of continuing education is also expected. Money Mentors meet monthly for continuing education training as well as planning projects.

Cost: A one-time of $40 fee helps cover training and material costs. Partial scholarships available if needed.

Location: Serve where you live and/or work within Livingston, McLean, and Woodford counties.

Supervision: Money Mentor volunteers work with University of Illinois Extension staff including Kathy Sweedler, Consumer Economics Educator and Camaya Wallace Bechard, Consumer Economics Educator, University of Illinois Extension serving Livingston, McLean, and Woodford counties.

Qualifications:

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills,
  • Age 18 or older,
  • Ability to work with individuals in a respectful and non-judgmental manner,
  • Ability to maintain participant confidentiality and trust,
  • Ability to attend all training sessions,
  • Access to a telephone and transportation, and
  • Commitment to follow University of Illinois Extension's research-based financial education strategies and recommendations
