December 6, 2012

SPRINGFIELD–Lincoln Land Community College's Green Center is hosting the 10th Annual Central Illinois Composting Symposium Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013 from noon to 5 p.m. in the Trutter Center on the Springfield campus, 5250 Shepherd Road. Registrations are being accepted now.

The theme for this year's symposium is "Composting for a Sustainable Community." The symposium is a forum for sharing composting information; stimulating the composting market; and bringing composters, educators, and businesses together so that everyone can benefit from learning about this excellent organic soil amendment. Participants will learn about composting organic materials and resources available to be a successful composter. A Build Your Own Bin workshop will follow the symposium at 5:30 p.m. where participants can learn more about vermicomposting and construct their own composting bin for use at home or work.

Radio host and award-winning columnist Mike Nowak will provide the keynote presentation. Symposium presenters include educators and professionals from Illinois Green Economy Network, University of Illinois Extension, Illinois Stewardship Alliance, Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity and Midwest Fiber Recycling.

Symposium registration is $25 before Feb. 5, $30 after Feb. 5. The symposium is free to students with a valid ID. Registrations will be accepted at the door the day of the workshop. Build Your Own Bin registration is $15 before Feb. 5, $20 after Feb. 5.

Businesses or organizations related to composting or gardening are invited to exhibit at the symposium. Exhibitor space is $55, which includes one registration to the symposium (registration only; BYOB fee not included). Also, live worms and a variety of composting books will be available for purchase. Cash and checks only; no credit cards accepted.
