Earthquakes

Be ready when things start to shake

Body

Illinois is not immune from earthquake activity. In fact, one of the nation's most violent earthquake's ever, part of a series of events along the New Madrid fault in the 1800's, was felt strongly in the state. There are several active fault zones in and near Illinois, and the geology of our part of the Midwest causes earthquakes to be felt over larger regions than elsewhere. Many of the suggested preparation activities closely mirror those which we should be using for severe weather and other activities.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has some basic earthquake information to help you prepare.
