4-H youth walk the red carpet at American Criminals premiere

Youth on a red carpet

Chicago, IL — Three talented 4-H members from Central Illinois walked the red carpet at the premiere of the feature film American Criminals. Brennan Shoemaker and Keeley Shoemaker from Jersey County, along with Genevieve Emery from Macoupin County, were not only part of the film’s cast as extras but also had the opportunity to see themselves on the big screen at the movie premiere May 18.

Audiences will have the chance to see these 4-Hers shine when American Criminals officially debuts. The film's release, a feature-length adaptation of the infamous Leopold-Loeb story, coincides with the 100th anniversary.

Members and their parents received the opportunity to work on this project in June 2023 in Carlinville. The setting of this particular scene was in the courtroom of the Carlinville courthouse. 4-Hers gained on set experience as film extras and were able to work on set with actors. They also experienced all facets of movie-making magic including lighting, filming, and costuming. In addition, members experienced working with a choreographer in a very short time for a scene.

This incredible opportunity was made possible by the Central Illinois Film Commission, which facilitated the participation of these young talents. The red-carpet premiere event took place at the Emily Hotel in Chicago, Illinois. The screening of the movie was on the roof top of the hotel shown on a very large screen tv and was attended by approximately 250 people.

"The experience was overall very fun,” says 4-Her and cast member Genevieve Emery. “I got to meet new people and have new opportunities. This experience was overall one of a kind, and I would love to one day work in the film industry. My favorite thing was probably being able to see the movie on the big screen as well as seeing all of the friends that I made."

The film’s release is set for summer 2024.
