Master Naturalists in Peoria County have introduced a new initiative called Accessible Nature Exploration, designed to support nature engagement for individuals who face mobility, sensory, processing, or other access barriers. Founded by volunteers Peggy West and Jen McDaniel, the program offers slower-paced outdoor adventures in the Peoria area, beginning in September 2024. Hikes and outings are intentionally kept to shorter distances, flat or ADA-friendly trails, with group support and inclusive facilitation. The program also incorporates creative and mindfulness activities to promote well-being, connection, and self-acceptance in natural settings. Participant feedback highlights the value of the inclusive, “no one left behind” ethos in facilitating new access, belonging, and healing through outdoor experiences.
