Mettler Woods Nature Preserve is a woodland remnant that is a reminder of natural areas that once covered central Illinois. Some areas of the preserve are covered with invasive garlic mustard. Garlic mustard spreads quickly using light, water, and nutrients, and leaves little for native plants. Garlic mustard also releases a chemical that slows the growth of other plants. Several Master Naturalists gather several times in the spring to remove garlic mustard before it can produce seeds.
