Groups in Hardin County are working to preserve the natural landscape by removing trash from public lands. This endeavor extends beyond Illinois Extension and includes the Shawnee National Forest, the Environmental Education Association of Illinois, Friends of the Shawnee National Forest, and members of the public.

A total of 4472 pounds of trash has been removed from Hardin County since the first Trash Blast was held there, including tires, a swimming pool, and furniture. Through this ongoing effort in counties across far southern Illinois, more than 15,000 pounds of trash have been removed and properly disposed of.
