Habitat

The Tyner-Lael habitat project in rural Ashland began in 2015. It consists of a six-pool wetland and currently has about 20 acres of prairie planting. An additional 11 acres have been enrolled in a Conservation Reserve Program pollinator project, and was seeded in November 2025.

The project was funded largely through grants from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Partners in Wildlife program. Additional funding came from grants through Apex Wind, Trees Forever Illinois Buffer Project, Project Wingspan, Wild Turkey Federation, and The Friends of the Sangamon Valley. The project has hosted field trips for more than 300 people, including Master Naturalist classes, school groups, 4-H clubs, Girl Scouts, and church groups.
