Polycystic ovary disease is another diabetes-related condition. It may affect females of child-bearing age, sometimes as young as 11 or 12. Many with PCOS are insulin resistant. More than half of those with PCOS develop type 2 diabetes. Many will develop gestational diabetes if they become pregnant. However, becoming pregnant is difficult for those with PCOS. Irregular monthly periods, having trouble getting pregnant, or excess acne or hair growth can be symptoms.
