Notes on the Event Schedule Change

Due to a conflicting event, we will be cancelling our hike, but we encourage you to attend Dixon's Fall Frolic instead!

Fall Frolic:

Fall is prime time at the Dixon Waterfowl Refuge, when migrating ducks, geese, and other waterbirds stop over on Hennepin & Hopper Lakes. Join TWI staff on Saturday, October 17, for a guided hike, open house, a restoration equipment showcase, and lunch on us.

We’ll start the morning on the Marquis Oak Ridge Trail. The crushed-gravel trail winds through restored prairie and wetland to Oak Ridge with its viewing platform overlooking the marsh. It’s one of the best places on the Refuge to watch migrating waterfowl. The full trail is five miles round trip. Shuttles are available if you’d prefer to not hike the whole stretch but still enjoy the view. Bring binoculars if you have them.

Back at the Bunkhouse, join us for lunch and an open house. See the tools and equipment the Refuge crew uses in their daily restoration work.

Enjoy a guided hike through the scenic wetlands led by Illinois Extension’s Master Naturalist volunteers.  The 3,000 acre Refuge is home to more than 730 native plant species and 270 bird species.  Thousands of migrating waterfowl use Hennepin & Hopper Lakes as a critical stopover during the fall migration.  Explore the wetlands and learn about the important conservation work being done at the Refuge. 
 
This program is suitable for all ages and levels of birdwatching experience, from curious beginners to seasoned enthusiasts.
