Prairie and savanah restoration in the Mackinaw River Watershed

Project Focus
Water Quality
Habitat
Invasive Species

ParkLands Foundation works to preserve the Mackinaw River watershed by creating a corridor of protected land along the upper and middle sections of the river. In Woodford County, ParkLands works in four major preserves totaling over 1,000 acres, including the Letcher Basin Land and Water Reserve. At Letcher Basin, Master Naturalists help manage nearly 300 acres of restored prairie and savanna, as well as riparian woodland. In addition to working on prescribed burns, the primary work is the never-ending challenge of controlling aggressive native and non-native invasive vegetation, including autumn olive, bush honeysuckle, Sericea lespedeza, teasel, and multiflora rose.
