Stewardship planning at Butterfield Trail State Recreation area

Project Focus
Invasive Species
Conservation
Stewardship

Until 2025, Master Naturalist programs had not been taking place in Iroquois County due to a lack of natural areas, permissions, and partnerships with landowners. Now, the program is developing a stewardship plan with the Department of Natural Resources for the Butterfield Trail State Recreation Area. This 120-acre site is being reclaimed by the state, naturalists, and outdoor enthusiasts. Master Naturalists will help establish firebreaks for prescribed burns and remove invasive plants with herbicides and by hand.
