Earth Day Tree Planting Workshop
Help grow the forests of tomorrow! 🌳 Youth and families are invited to take part in our annual 4-H Green Communities Tree Planting Day, where participants will work together to plant a 25-tree oak savanna as part of a statewide effort to restore native oak-hickory ecosystems. These fire-resistant native oaks help rebuild wildlife habitat, support biodiversity, and strengthen local landscapes across Illinois. Participants will learn proper tree planting techniques and help create a lasting impact in our community.
In addition to planting trees, youth will take part in a hands-on science activity. Participants will conduct a viable acorn float test, comparing acorns collected from local parks with store-purchased acorns to discover which seeds are most likely to grow into healthy oak trees. Youth will learn about oak tree reproduction, seed viability, and how forests naturally regenerate. Each participant will take home acorns to plant, giving them the opportunity to start growing their own oak tree and continue the conservation effort at home.
Open to youth ages 5 and older as of 9/1/25.
