Get the Scoop on Sodium

Join Illinois Extension Nutrition and Wellness Educator, Susan Glassman and “Get the Scoop on Sodium.”  Are you wondering which salt is the best? Or how much salt is needed each day? Salt is salt but can vary depending on several factors like geographical location. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend less than 2300 mg of sodium per day for healthy eating patterns. That can be easier said than done when we examine the sodium content of foods. Learn about the Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension (DASH Diet), how to identify sodium on nutrition fact labels, and simple shopping tips to help reduce sodium. Compare types of salt and salt substitutes in class with Susan. Try a sample of our recipe for Rainbow Rice, which highlights great flavors with no salt added, and is easy to prepare at home. Take home Illinois Extension research-based resources and recipes you can trust using to decrease sodium in everyday meals.
