The Heart of 4-H is in its club meetings

At a time when it seemed the country was shutting down, 4-H clubs in LaSalle County overcame many challenges to continue club meetings, activities and community service projects. With consideration to COVID requirements and keeping 4-H families safe, clubs thought creatively when planning meetings. Whether in a Zoom meeting, gathering at a park shelter, in a yard, barn or parking lot, club members completed activities and community service projects. 4-H members never stop learning.

Clubs utilized Zoom to hold club meetings and complete a variety of projects in STEM areas. Some clubs took a trip to Mars while others created catapults and 3-D structures. A few clubs were able to take a mini field trip as one did by visiting a local farm to learn how marketing strategies and logistics play a huge role in farm operations. Some highlights of clubs’ community service projects included: making holiday painted wooden gifts and hand crafted cards for local nursing care facilities, caroling outside Horizon House assisted living homes and creating monthly decoration and gift packs for local nursing homes.

Spring and summer will bring many new 4-H club activities and programs to communities throughout LaSalle County. To learn more about 4-H opportunities in LaSalle County call 4-H Youth Development Coordinator Toni Pienta at the Ottawa Extension office, 815-433-0707.
