Marshall-Putnam County Seeds to Harvest Program in Full Swing

Master Gardener planting at school

The 3rd grade students at Fieldcrest Intermediate School are enjoying learning to garden from the University of Illinois Extension Marshall-Putnam Master Gardeners.  The students are responsible for the planting and care as they plant their garden under the guidance of the Master Gardeners.

This is a six week 4-H Seeds to Harvest program that teaches students the fundamentals of gardening.  The first week is set up to plant the gardens, and for the last week the students enjoy eating from the garden they planted. Learning organic gardening practices, the students will learn about weed control, soil, good and bad bugs, fruits and vegetables - a hands-on experience to learning by doing.

The Fieldcrest School is unique to the Seeds to Harvest Program as they turn their gardens into a community garden for the summer. The Marshall-Putnam University of Illinois Master Gardeners have been doing this project for 12 years and are proud to say, “We are now doing Seeds to Harvest in every school district in Marshall and Putnam counties”.
