Giving the Gift of Flowers and Herbs series is ideal for those individuals who want to learn about incorporating growing cut flowers and herbs in their own backyard or garden bed. This four-part series costs $25 and is for flower enthusiasts, gardeners, or families wanting to extend their knowledge to learn tips and techniques for producing more blooms and the importance of giving back to their community.
- April 17 @ 6 p.m. at Jefferson County Extension Office - Garden Design & Seed Starting Cut Flowers & Herbs using kits provided.
- May 15 @ 6 p.m. at Mt. Vernon Community Garden – Planting, Spacing, and Support Structures for Cut Flowers and Herbs. We demonstrate and plant a 4’x8’ bed and discuss weed control options. Kits will be provided to help trellis plants.
- June 26 @ 6 p.m. at Mt. Vernon Community Garden – Pinching, Fertilizing, Bugs -OH MY! Learn what else loves your Cut Flowers and Herbs. Succession planting will be discussed for the second wave of blooms for fall. We will discuss management and receive a kit to help monitor plants.
- July 17 @ 6 p.m. at Mt. Vernon Community Garden - Harvest and Post-harvest Handling Techniques. Kits will be provided for demonstration. Then Flower and Herb Arranging 101 (location TBA, in Mt. Vernon). The participants will learn how to harvest and create a fresh flower & herb bouquet.
Youth ages 14-18 are invited to attend, but registration on ZSuite is also required.
There will be an opportunity for Jefferson County youth to exhibit their arrangements at the Jefferson County 4-H Show on July 19.
