Rubella

With the availability of the vaccine, Rubella, also called German Measles, has been eliminated in the United States. Rubella can cause complications and birth defects for unborn babies. Pregnant woman can lose a baby if she contracts Rubella. The CDC lists the following symptoms for Rubella

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Pink eye
  • Swollen glands
  • Discomfort
  • Cough
  • Runny nose

Rubella in pregnant woman can lead to the following problems for babies:

  • Heart problems
  • Hearing or eyesight loss
  • Learning disabilities
  • Liver or spleen damage

Rubella Vaccine

Two vaccines are available:

  • The MMR vaccine protects against rubella measles, and mumps
  • The MMRV vaccine protects against rubella, measles, mumps, and chickenpox
