Local FFA and 4-H Members Place at Livestock Judging Contest

DUQUOIN, Ill. —Local FFA and 4-H members competed in a livestock judging contest at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds on Saturday, March 7.

Livestock judging is the evaluation of an animal's characteristics and making a comparison to other animals and the ideal standard of that particular class. Many of the participating youth will go on to showcase their own livestock at local fairs this summer.

Local FFA high schools represented: Anna-Jonesboro, Century, Cobden, Dongola, DuQuoin, Elverado, Goreville, Meridian, Pinckneyville, Trico and Woodlawn. Counties representing 4-H: Clinton, Jackson, Massac, Monroe, Perry, Pulaski, Randolph, Union, Washington and White.

Prizes were awarded to the top three scores within the junior and senior categories. The 2020 winners included:

FFA Livestock Judging Team

  • First place-Elverado High School
  • Second place- Anna-Jonesboro High School
  • Third place- Goreville High School

FFA Dairy Judging Team

  • First place-Dongola High School
  • Second place- Trico High School
  • Third place- Goreville High School

4-H Junior Livestock Team

  • First place- Monroe County
  • Second place- Massac County
  • Third place- Clinton County

4-H Senior Livestock Team

  • First place- Monroe County (team 1)
  • Second place- Monroe County (team 2)
  • Third place- Massac County

4-H Senior Dairy (Individual Competition)

  • First place- Harris Ehlers (Randolph County)
  • Second place- Riley Smith (Randolph County)
  • Third place- Andrew Froemling (Jackson County)

4-H Junior Livestock (Individual Competition)

  • First place- Colton Clausen (Union County)
  • Second place- Bailey Pearl (Perry County)
  • Third place- Shelby Pearl (Perry County)

4-H Senior Livestock (Individual Competition)

  • First place- Paige Epplin (Perry County)
  • Second place- Riley Smith (Randolph County)
  • Third place- Levi Kurtz (Randolph County)
