4-H Green Communities Tree Planting
Prairie Grass Nature Museum
Hero Park, 2041 N. Orchard Ln. Round Lake Beach, IL 60073
May 3 from 1 PM - 3 PM
The Illinois 4-H Green Communities Tree Program, in partnership with the Lake County 4-H, Soil and Water Conservation District, and Round Lake Park District, is working to rebuild our native ecosystem.
Did you know that Illinois once had 14 million acres of trees, but now only has 5 million due to modern development? Illinois 4-H is partnering with Illinois Soil and Water Conservation Districts to plant oak trees across dozens of counties in Illinois this spring, and we need YOUR help!
We will be planting fire-resistant, native oak species in public spaces for the community to enjoy. These 25-tree savannas will help rebuild our native ecosystems, 3/4 of an acre at a time.
Benefits include:
- Add trees to a local park
- Help the environment and your community
- Gain service hours for your school and/or a state activity for 4-H records
- Build a legacy for future generations to enjoy
Youth ages 8-18 will learn:
- Ecological benefits of native plants and animals
- Importance and role of oak trees as a keystone species
- Role of oak trees in Round Lake and its habitats
- Why we plant oak trees
- How a tree grows
- How to plant a tree
- Needs for a tree to be successful
What to Bring:
Dress for the weather with appropriate shoes
- Shovels, gloves, and any other equipment for digging holes to plant the trees
- Adults are encouraged to help with the planting
