Edwards County 4-H Ambassador: Ava Anderson

The Importance of 4-H In My Life
4H has made such a positive impact on my life. Many people do not realize how much a single, extra
activity can improve maturity level and life skills. Throughout my eight years in 4-H, I’ve learned
countless skills such as: responsibility, respect, leadership, how to run a meeting, dedication,
passion and love for my club, community, and personal projects, generosity, love for animals, new
friendships, and public speaking skills.
The majority of the skills I’ve learned through 4-H are not typical skills that are taught in a
classroom; however, 95% of the skills I’ve learned through 4-H, I’ve been able to use in a
classroom setting or school meeting.
When I was younger, I never really understood the purpose of learning more than what was taught in
school. Yet looking back, I am thrilled that I joined 4-H, not only for the fun and friends, but
for the life lessons and the projects I cannot be taught in school. For example, taking care of my
pigs has taught me to love an animal and how to properly care for the animal. In addition, I have
learned responsibility and respect. Leadership skills are not something usually taught in school,
but I wouldn’t be able to serve as an ambassador if I had not been taught how to lead a group in my
4-H club and projects. 4-H has provided a place where I know I have friends and people care about
me. 4-H has also given me the ability to excel in areas that are not offered in school. I would not
have the capability to work in my community, lead a group, or serve as any type of ambassador
without the knowledge I’ve gained throughout my years of 4-H.
Competitiveness is always a factor when it comes to presenting our final projects. However, the
purpose of completing a project is not to go home with a fancy, new ribbon, but to learn new skills
that you can apply to other areas of your life. I am grateful to have learned many lessons
throughout various projects, community service, and community-wide 4-H activities.
I encourage each of you to explore the various opportunities available through 4-H. Seek out a
local 4-H club. It may change your life!
