Become an expert with Master Gardener online training

Do you have a passion for gardening? Expert volunteers are “helping others learn to grow” across Illinois through community service garden projects and outreach.

Through a self-paced online training program, participants can take their love of gardening to the next level by becoming an Illinois Master Gardener.

“Our online training is a great opportunity for folks who need more flexibility to participate,” said State Master Gardener Specialist Candice Hart. “It is a self-paced program that can be completed at any time.”

From the comfort of home on a desktop, laptop, or tablet, participants will be introduced to in-depth horticulture content through 13 modules covering topics such as soils and fertilizers, plant diseases, entomology, pest management organic gardening, and more. Training can be completed in 14 weeks with four hours of weekly work. A strong internet connection is highly recommended.

The course costs $300 and registration is open until May 23, 2022. Cost of registration includes videos, a manual, and reading materials. For more information contact Wendy Ferguson, or let us know you are interested by filling out a short form.

After receiving training, volunteers have the opportunity to participate in education programs in their communities. Those opportunities may include speaking at clubs, civic groups, or schools; establishing demonstration gardens that serve as educational tools; and educating citizens on how to establish community gardens.

University of Illinois Extension provides equal opportunities in programs and employment. If you need a reasonable accommodation to participate in programming, contact Wendy Ferguson. Early requests are strongly encouraged to allow sufficient time for meeting participant needs.
