JUNCTION, Ill. — All eyes were on the sky when Gallatin County High School students put their new-found piloting skills to the test by guiding drones through an obstacle course. In this week-long program offered by University of Illinois Extension and 4-H, students explored the fundamental principles governing flight mechanics, as well as career opportunities in the burgeoning field of drone technology. Hands-on sessions provided teacher David Matthew’s physics and programming classes with invaluable insights into the practical applications of drones in modern agriculture and beyond.
Illinois Extension in Gallatin, Hamilton, Hardin, Pope, Saline and White counties implemented the Drones in the Classroom state signature 4-H program for the first time in March, marking a significant milestone in the organization's commitment to empowering youth through innovative educational initiatives.
4-H Youth Educator Lindsay Adams and Gallatin County Extension Program Coordinator Kassy Scates introduced the program, which represents a crucial expansion of Extension's diverse array of programs, all of which are designed to enrich learning experiences in libraries, clubs, and classrooms across the state.
A highlight of the program included a special appearance by the Shawneetown Fire Department and a demonstration of their search and rescue drone’s advanced capabilities.
Illinois Extension is committed to fostering a culture of learning and discovery, and the state signature program underscores its dedication to educational excellence by offering programs that prepare youth to be future leaders, innovators, entrepreneurs, and problem solvers.
