Local 4-H Member Attends Summer Leadership Conference

MARION, Ill.— A local 4-H member had the chance to experience a one-of-a-kind leadership program this summer. Kadyn Martin was selected to represent the University of Illinois Extension Franklin/Perry/Jackson/Randolph/Williamson county unit at LEAD: The Spirit of Lincoln Youth Leadership Academy.

This one-week residential program, held on the campus of Illinois College, allowed participants to learn more about the qualities that made Abraham Lincoln such a powerful leader. They explored Lincoln’s life and times by visiting various historic sites throughout the National Heritage Area to see how individuals were able to make a difference in their communities and bring about change in their state and nation. Site stops include The Old State Capitol, Lincoln’s Tomb, Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, New Salem and New Philadelphia. Martin’s favorite part of the trip was the tour of the Old State Capitol.

Participants kept an interactive journal and discussed ways to become better leaders. They learned why those same assets are essential in our leaders today and how they can apply those qualities as they develop their own leadership skills for the future. Participants discussed qualities of honesty, empathy, humility and perseverance and developed a plan to integrate those characteristics into their own lives as they return home from the conference.
