This is a beginner blacksmithing experience program for any youth ages 15-18 years old as of September 1, 2022. Working with Rockford Blacksmithing Guild members, participants will learn about blacksmithing history and tools, forge safety, fire-lighting, and basic blacksmithing skills. Participants will create a mountable Shepards hook through hands-on learning.
This opportunity is available to both current 4-H members and youth interested in joining 4-H for the first time. Space is very limited and registration is on a first-come-first-serve and must include payment to hold your place on the roster. Youth must commit to attending all eight sessions- the first three safety sessions are mandatory to attend.
Classes will be held on Sundays starting January 22 through March 12 from 2-4 pm. The first class will be held at a separate location TBD (most likely Cherry Valley Library). All other classes will be held at Midway Village at the blacksmithing shop, 6799 Guilford Road, Rockford.
Participants must have long hair tied back and secured from falling forward, a long-sleeved shirt- NO screenprinting or pressed images on the shirt of any kind, non-ripped jeans and no-lace steel-toed safety shoes (leather uppers recommended) by the second class on January 29. Aprons, gloves, safety goggles and hammers will be provided by the Extension office on loan. All other materials will be provided by Rockford Blacksmithing Guild and Midway Village.
One adult (18+) may stay with a participant for each meeting. No siblings or other minors are allowed at the blacksmith shop. Roaming the Museum or Historic Village is not allowed unless admission is paid in advance at the main desk. The adults must stay in designated areas and should not interact with participants unless it is an emergent situation. Cell phones must be silenced for safety purposes.
Cost for this SPIN club is $30 for 4-H members and $50 for new members. New members must enroll in Z Suites at https://4h.zsuite.org.
