Maezie Nettleton is the Illinois Extension 4-H STEAM program coordinator serving Grundy, Kankakee, and Will Counties. In this role he provides support and coordinates programs for 4-H members and community youth in the areas of science, technology, engineering, agriculture, and math.
Supporting strong and resilient youth, families, and communities is a top priority for Extension and Maezie supports youth in finding their spark, allowing youth to thrive in meaningful ways well into college or future careers.
With a background in youth programing in outside environments and experiential learning, Maezie grew up on Lake Superior in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula before going to college. Their experience in small farm agriculture – including working on farms before and during their college career – provided a strong background in agriculture education, quantitative research, and sustainable farming.
A goal for Maezie is to create accessible experiences and encourage youth to explore interests. By creating connections with youth, volunteers, and community members, Maezie creates new experiences that sparks interest for youth.
Maezie holds a Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture, food and natural resources education from Michigan State University with minors in educational studies, environmental science and sustainability, and sustainable agriculture and food systems. Throughout their education, Maezie’s focus was on experiential learning and accessibility within food systems.
Outside their work with Illinois Extension, Maezie enjoys being outside where he can frequently be seen roller skating and gardening. He also enjoys reading and spending time with their lizard.
