Successfully Managing Your Yard Waste with Compost

Leaves and compost

Join University of Illinois Extension Natural Resources, Environment, and Energy Educator Jay Solomon on Tuesday, September 16 at either 1:30 p.m. or 6 p.m. for this program on how to manage your yard waste effectively. This program is being held at the Jo Daviess County Extension Office, 204 N. Vine Street, Elizabeth, IL, there will be no fee to attend but pre-registration is requested. To register or for more information, visit us online at go.illinois.edu/jsw or call the Extension Office at 815-858-2273.

Fall brings beautiful seasonal changes, and often a large pile of yard waste. Instead of sending it to the landfill, why not turn that waste into something valuable? Composting is a simple and effective way to transform leaves, grass clippings, and other organic materials into nutrient-rich compost that supports healthier gardens and a more sustainable environment.

In addition to the benefits of compost, Solomon will dig into the challenges and benefits of different compost system designs and management issues. This will include a discussion of things learned from two local demonstration systems and a weather permitting trip outside to view the compost system at the Extension Office. Attendees will leave the program with the knowledge to get started on and have a successful compost system.

This program is part of a fall gardening series that includes: “Growing Great Apples”, “Succulent Dish Garden Workshop: Design, Create, Cultivate”, “Creating with Willow Branches”, and “Invasive Species: Fall Edition”.

If you need a reasonable accommodation to attend this program, please contact the Extension Office at 815-858-2273. Early requests are strongly encouraged to allow sufficient time to meet your needs.
