TAYLORVILLE, Ill. — Fourth grade students from Christian County explored local conservation practices and natural resource stewardship during Conservation Day on April 30, an interactive, hands-on learning experience hosted by University of Illinois Extension at the Christian County Fairgrounds.
Designed specifically for 4th grade classrooms, Conservation Day is a field trip-style event that engages students in outdoor, station-based activities focused on environmental science, conservation careers, and safety. Participating schools included Pana, Taylorville, and Edinburg, representing 11 classrooms and 250 students.
Throughout the day, students rotated through a variety of educational stations covering topics such as wildlife, soil and water conservation, grain bin safety, fisheries, forestry, pollinators, prescribed fire safety, beekeeping, waste management, and outdoor safety. Each session was aligned with science and environmental education, helping spark curiosity, deepen understanding of the local environment, and encourage responsible decision-making that supports a sustainable future.
Community partners, government agencies, and Extension educators with expertise in conservation and natural resources led educational stations. Partners for Conservation Day included IFish Illinois, The Bat Doctor, Illinois Conservation Police, Family Beekeepers of Illinois, Pheasants Forever, the Farm Service Agency, and local Soil and Water Conservation Districts.
“Conservation Day provides students with a meaningful outdoor learning experience that connects classroom instruction with real-world applications,” said Sara Marten, Extension county director. “By learning from both professionals and volunteers committed to conservation, students gain a better understanding of how natural resources are managed and how they can play a role in protecting them.”
Conservation Day offered a memorable opportunity for students and teachers to engage with local experts, ask questions, and build awareness of conservation practices that impact their communities.
