Champaign County Master Gardeners present Monarchs & Milkweeds - A Children's Program on Sat., June 4 at the Idea Garden on South Lincoln Avenue in Urbana.  This event is recommended for children ages 5-9.  Adult supervision is required.

Seating is limited to 25 children per session.  Please choose the 9:00 a.m. or 10:30 a.m. timeslot.  One registration will need to be completed for each child.

At this program, children will learn about monarchs in a fun and artful way.  The program will begin with a 10-15 minute educational lesson about:

  • Butterfly anatomy;
  • Stages of metamorphosis;
  • How to identify a monarch butterfly;
  • Monarch migration;
  • Identifying different types of milkweed; and
  • Knowing where each type grows best. 

After the lesson, they will paint a pillow case to take home. 

The cost is $3 per child.  This is a rain or shine event.  The fee is non-refundable.

Should there be an extreme weather event expected (tornadic activity, extreme heat, etc.), we will send an email no later than 12 noon on Fri., June 3.  Should we need to reschedule due to expected extreme weather, this event will be held on Sat., June 11 at the same time you registered.

The Idea Garden is a Champaign County Master Gardener community project located on the University of Illinois Arboretum grounds located on South Lincoln Avenue in Urbana.  

Parking will be available in the lot north of the Idea Garden.  Parking is also available in the Arboretum parking lots and along the road.  Note that meters are not enforced on the weekends.
