4-H Green Communities Project

Did you know that Illinois once held 14 million acres of trees, but that number has dropped to 5 million due to modern development practices? Illinois 4-H has partnered with Illinois Soil and Water Conservation Districts to help turn the tide by planting more than 1,000 oak trees in 40+ counties across Illinois this spring and we need YOUR help!

We will be planting fire-resistant, native oak species in public spaces where the community can enjoy the benefits. These 25-tree savannas will help rebuild our native ecosystems, 3/4 of an acre at a time.

  • Gain service hours for your school and/or a state activity for 4-H records
  • Help the environment and your community
  • Build a legacy for future generations to enjoy

4-H families and community members are invited to join the Green Trees Planting Project with 4-H and University of Illinois Extension in partnership with the Kendall County Soil and Water Conservation District.

A few notes:

  • An adult/parent/guardian will need to be present for youth participants.
  • Feel free to bring shovels and gloves, or other helpful tools.
  • You also may want to bring water to drink. Snacks will be provided.
  • Please wear close-toed shoes and dress appropriate for the weather and for getting dirty.
  • Watch your email for any important updates, including changes due to weather.
