Lockhart's Barber College and 4-H team up for career exploration program

DECATUR, Ill. — Learning a trade is a career path available to students who don’t want to attend a four-year college. Trade schools offer a more direct route to a degree or accreditation. However, many youth are unaware of this option and struggle with the question, “what do I want to do after high school?” University of Illinois Extension’s DeWitt, Macon, and Piatt 4-H program is partnering with Lockhart’s Barber College to provide students in sixth through twelfth grades an opportunity to explore a Barbering career.

4-H Barbering 101 is a monthly program. The first session will be at 5:15 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 17, and is virtual. Additional sessions will be scheduled and may be in-person.

Brandon Kraus, owner of Lockhart’s Barber College, will demonstrate barbering techniques and discuss entrepreneurship during the monthly sessions.

“This is a great opportunity for youth who don’t know what to do after high school or for those who may be interested in cutting hair to explore what it’s like to become a barber,” says 4-H Program Coordinator Charles Young. “We are excited to collaborate with Lockhart’s Barber College to offer this to our community.”

4-H Barbering 101 is free, but you must register at go.illinois.edu/Barbering101 by Feb. 16. Participants will receive a link to the event once registration is completed. For more information, please contact event coordinator at cayoung2@illinois.edu.

University of Illinois Extension provides equal opportunities in programs and employment. If you need a reasonable accommodation to participate in this program, please contact 217-877-6042. Early requests are strongly encouraged to allow sufficient time for meeting your access need.
