Understanding the Nutritional Needs when Living with Cancer

Cancer touches the lives of many people living in and around our community. When receiving a cancer diagnosis, we are often faced with many uncertainties due to the difficulties in predicting what the actual impact cancer and its treatment will have in and on our lives.

Having positive social-emotional support from family, and friends, as well as taking the time to educate yourself about your cancer will not only help you feel empowered and in control of your treatment, but also may affect how you respond to treatment.

Additionally, good nutrition is critical to your long-term success. Getting the nutrients your body needs to maintain your body weight and strength, while nourishing healthy body tissues and fighting-off infections is an essential part of cancer treatment. Unfortunately, getting adequate nutrition sometimes can be a challenge, due to cancer and its treatment.

If you or a loved one is dealing with the effects of cancer, please join the University of Illinois Extension’s Nutrition and Wellness Educator, Diane Reinhold, and the Senior Resource Center on Thursday, September 12, 2019, from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM, at the Senior Activity Center, 216 E. Stephenson Street, Freeport.

During this workshop, participants will gain an understanding of the dietary challenges faced by those living with cancer; explain the role diet plays before, during and after cancer treatment, and offer tips to help you meet your unique nutritional needs.

There is no cost to attend this program, however seating is limited and pre-registration is required. The deadline for registration is Tuesday, September 10, 2019. To register or for more information call our office at (815) 235-4125 or visit us on-line at go.illinois.edu/jsw
