University of Illinois Extension offers Canner Testing at Edwards County

Can Foods Safely this Summer with Free Test from Extension

Albion, IL. - To ensure safety in the home canning process, pressure canner dial gauges should be tested once per year. This canning season, University of Illinois Extension is offering free testing of dial gauge pressure canners at the Edwards County Extension office.

Over time, the accuracy of a dial gauge can become inaccurate. If the pressure is lower than recommended, the internal temperature of the food will not be high enough to kill harmful bacteria.

Currently our office is closed to the public.  We can make you an appointment to get your canner lid and gauge tested.  Simply call the Extension office at 618.445.2934 or email buerste2@illinois.edu.  You will be given an appointment time.  Pull up to the office door and we will come out and get your lid and gauge, test it, and return it to you in your vehicle.

University of Illinois Extension provides equal opportunities in programs and employment. If you need reasonable accommodation to participate in this program, please call 618-445-2934.  Early requests are strongly encouraged to allow sufficient time for meeting your access needs.
