YORKVILLE, Ill. – Kendall County 4-H members marked the culmination of their 4-H year virtually this year, through an online project show. More than 300 entries were submitted in this format as families embraced this adaptation to their normal in-person summer fairs and shows.
“Although quite different than a typical year, the 2020 4-H virtual show still provided a great way for members to show what they have learned and accomplished, and to gain valuable feedback,” said Kim Eisnaugle, 4-H Youth Development Program Coordinator in Kendall County. “This year, members uploaded photos or videos of their projects and one-page reports to an online system in place of a physical show.”
Each 4-H year, members select projects that interest them from a list of more than 80 across the broader areas of animal science; civic engagement; creative arts; environment; healthy living; science, technology, engineering and math; and career and leadership development. Once youth choose projects, they dive into learning on their own, through local workshops or clubs, or with the help of caring adults in their lives. Often their goal is to show off their project work through the summer 4-H show.
Kendall County 4-H member Abi Munar worked hard on multiple projects this year, including her award-winning civic engagement project, a free lending library. “I did this for my project to honor my grandma, as well as help my community,” she said. “To me, 4-H is looking for ways to help others.”
During the 2020 virtual show, just like with in-person competitions, knowledgeable volunteers reviewed virtual submissions and provided positive, constructive feedback. This helps 4-H’ers continue growing and learning into the next year.
“We thank all of our Kendall County 4-H show volunteer judges, award sponsors, superintendents, club leaders and other volunteers for giving our youth this important experience in a memorable year,” said Eisnaugle. “Thank you also to our 4-H members and families for your hard work and dedication, successfully navigating the virtual online shows.”
