Join Ambassador for The Xerces Society, Carol Elkins, as she presents “Protecting the Jewels of the Night,” a talk about the beloved summer bug — fireflies! She will talk about what fireflies are, what they need, and how to attract these nighttime jewels to your yard.
 
When: Friday, Sept. 19 from 10-11 a.m.
Where: 535 S. Randall Road, St. Charles IL 60174
Cost: FREE. Registration is required for each person. Space may be limited.

About the presenter: Since 2022 Carol Elkins has been an active Ambassador for The Xerces Society of Invertebrate Conservation, where she has had the privilege to educate and inspire people to care for insects and other invertebrates through delivery of her Bring Back the Pollinators and Monarch Conservation presentations to a variety of audiences. New for 2025 is her latest Xerces’ program on fireflies:  Protecting the Jewels of the Night.
 
By day, Carol is the Conservation Program Specialist for Geneva Lake Conservancy, where she manages the Conservation@Home and Keep It Blue programs.  Additionally, she supports The Land Conservancy of McHenry County as their Conservation@Home Assistant.  Within these land trusts, Carol consults with private homeowners, homeowner associations, businesses, and schools, where she offers direction and ecological best practices to restore and improve native habitat for people, water, and wildlife.
 
Carol is a University of Wisconsin Master Naturalist, who has volunteered across a multitude of conservation organizations across Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin.  She has personally been working with native plants for over three decades, with a consistent emphasis on supporting wildlife in her own landscapes.
