Plant sale offers unique opportunity to learn and grow

Vermilion County Master Gardener Plant Sale

DANVILLE, Ill. — Don't miss the University of Illinois Extension Vermilion County Master Gardeners' annual plant sale! This year's event offers the perfect opportunity to cultivate a thriving garden, whether you're a seasoned green thumb or just starting. Find everything you need, from a wide variety of vegetables developed specifically for containers to beautiful houseplants. Gardening enthusiasm continues to flourish, with growing interest in raised beds, houseplants, pollinators, and local food. Rising grocery bills have also fueled this trend!  Fortunately, there are many container-friendly vegetables perfect for those with limited space.

The Plant Sale is on Saturday, May 11th, at the First Presbyterian Church (100 N. Franklin St., Danville) from 8 am to noon. The event will be held in the gymnasium. Expect various annuals, perennials, vegetables, herbs, houseplants, and pollinator-friendly plants. "This year," says Master Gardener Coordinator Jenney Hanrahan, "we're particularly excited about our selection of heirloom and hybrid tomatoes and peppers. We have some truly unique varieties that you won't find just anywhere."

The Master Gardeners have been hosting this beloved event for over two decades, but perhaps the best part of this annual fundraiser is the free expert advice that comes with the plants. "Having the opportunity to talk directly with the gardener who grew the plant you're taking home is what makes this sale so special," says Jenney. "It's not something you can usually get at a typical garden center."

Arrive early for the best selection! Volunteers will be available to help load plants into your car. Admission and parking are free, and donations are taken for plants: proceeds fund Master Gardener's involvement and educational programs in community gardens, including projects with children and veterans. Vermilion County Master Gardeners volunteered over 9,000 hours in 2023 and grew and donated over 6,000 pounds of fresh produce to local food pantries, shelters, and senior citizens.
