Hometown Leaders

Body

Designed for grades 9-12 and beyond, this program was created by Extension and is a collaboration with local county board officials, reflecting two priorities of Extension’s work, “Thriving Youth” and “Community Involvement and Leadership.” Extension believes that if the younger generation gets involved in their community and becomes more aware of the opportunities that exist in the community, they should be more likely to stay, or be more inclined to return after exploration away from their “home turf.”

This three-part program introduces high-school and community college-age students to county government and to career opportunities available within county government. It consists of an “Intro to County Government” classroom session, a visit to a County Board meeting, and a day-long tour of county offices and facilities.  Participants will have ample opportunities to interact directly with County Board members and County Administrators.

These sessions take place over 2-3 weeks during the school year. There are spaces for 15-20 students.

Focus areas:

  • Civic Engagement
  • Leadership
  • Career Awareness
  • Social Studies
  • Personal Development
