As Pati Vitt a conservation scientist at the Chicago Botanic Garden says The goal of sustainable gardening is to create a self-reliant growth system &mdash a garden that can last indefinitely without inordinate external support.&rdquoReducing our impact on the environment through composting using rain barrels mulching with chopped leaves and other local materials growing our own food using raised beds and fruit trees while reducing pesticides and using more native plants are just some of the ways you can make your garden more sustainable for future generations.
Local garden expert George Hickman a DACC Horticulture instructor recently started a Sustainable Garden Club for DACC students based on his own garden practices.
George owns a sustainable farm in Watseka and will share his academic knowledge and own personal experiences.
