These camps are tiny but mighty — only 20 spots per day, and they always fill fast. If your kid has ever turned your backyard into a bug safari, tried to adopt a stick, or announced they're "one with nature now"...this is literally what they need.

 

Day campers dive into hands‑on nature fun featuring insects, reptiles, birds, mammals, plants, and whatever else the forest decides to show off. Expect chaotic‑good activities like:
Dead Ants — escape the anteater, embrace the drama
Chip Mining — excavating cookies to learn about earth science (yes, cookies… educational cookies)

 

Bonus for grown‑ups: While your young adventurers roam Russell Woods, you get a whole day to prep for the holiday weekend, run errands, or simply sit in silence.

 

Program Details
-Ages 7–11 (must have completed 1st grade)
-Offered through University of Illinois Extension + DeKalb County Forest Preserve District
-Led by Extension staff
-Activities vary each day — sign up for one or both!
-Campers explore Russell Woods Forest Preserve, hiking between the Natural Resource Education Center and stove‑heated cabins
-Kids are grouped by age for activities
