4-H Cooking Class held in Fulton County

adult teaching youth in the kitchen

Youth from Fulton, Mason, and Peoria counties recently gathered at the Illinois Extension office in Lewistown to sharpen their culinary skills to learn essential cooking techniques, explore a brand new 4-H Food Project area, and create delicious food.

Long-time 4-H volunteer and Lewistown High School Family & Consumer Science teacher, Nancy Williams, taught the children how to accurately measure ingredients, follow a recipe, make scones, clean up, and set a table. In addition to discovering how to take their 4-H foods project to the next level, 4-H Program Coordinator, Krista Gray, and youth experimented with Science Fun and Dairy Foods, a new project to Illinois 4-H. The children conducted scientific experiments on milk and learned how to make butter from heavy cream. The St. Louis District Dairy Council provided each participant with information and recipes using milk, and everyone received a cool “Dairy Up” stocking hat to remember the event. After spending the morning having fun, learning, and making memories, the new group of friends sat down together at the table and shared the food they had prepared.
