ULLIN, Ill. – Social isolation and loneliness can have a profound impact on well-being, particularly among older adults. The Family and Consumer Sciences Conference provided a welcoming space for seniors to connect, learn, and foster new friendships.
Most, if not all, in attendance were members of Home and Community Education (HCE). Illinois Extension and HCE have a close connection with a rich history. First known as the Home Bureau Federation, primarily composed of farm wives, today, they are the Illinois Association of Home and Community Education (IAHCE).
The conference, hosted by the University of Illinois Extension and held at Shawnee Community College, featured engaging lessons from Extension educators. Topics included strategies for enhancing social connections, managing stress, and navigating life’s transitions as we age. Agriculture and natural resources presentations highlighted the wellness benefits of nature, with engaging discussions on hummingbirds and hands-on activities like creating decorative Kokedama balls.
A highlight of the event was keynote speaker Becki Doiron, program and regional data manager for the Alzheimer’s Association Illinois Chapter. She shared valuable insights on maintaining brain and body health. The Alzheimer’s Association is dedicated to advancing global research, promoting early detection, and providing essential support for individuals and families affected by dementia.
County Director Jody Johnson was thrilled with the turnout from HCE members. This annual conference remains a cherished tradition for community members across Alexander, Johnson, Massac, Pulaski, and Union counties, reinforcing the power of connection and lifelong learning.
“Our HCE members are vital partners for Extension. We were happy to provide this opportunity to share resources with them while they connect and grow with one another,” said Johnson.
