Gingers are a diverse group of plants that are grown for their lush foliage and fragrant flowers. They range in height from 2-3 feet tall to 6-8 feet tall. Straplike leaves grow along slender stems and can be variegated. These clump growers prefer sites with light shade, and soils that are moist and slightly acidic. Frequent watering and fertilizing are needed to keep them blooming. In the fall after a light frost, dig the rhizomes, separate them and store in a cool, dry area until spring. In the spring, replant the rhizomes in the garden placing them about two inches deep.
