Master Naturalists in Fulton, Mason, Peoria, and Tazewell counties are invited to register to visit Revis Hill Prairie, one of the largest hill prairie complexes in Illinois. We will provide a lesson on hill prairies, recent management of the site, and then take you on a tour of one of Revis’s largest lobes of prairie.
This is a strenuous hike with steep slopes, downed logs and stumps, thorns and prickers. There are no established trails.
Bring water, bug spray for ticks and chiggers
Tour Guides:
- Eric Smith, Natural Heritage Biologist, Illinois Department of Natural Resources
- Michelle Simone, Stewardship Specialist, Illinois Department of Natural Resources
- Lou Nelms, Revis Hill Prairie Volunteer Extraordinaire
Hill Prairies are a unique type of prairie in the Prairie State of Illinois. Fifty year ago the Illinois Natural Areas Inventory identified 534.4 acres of high quality hill prairie vegetation. Of that, Revis Hill Prairie represents more than 10% of the statewide total (51 acres).
Location: Located in Mason County on the bluffs of the Sangamon River Valley. The site is bounded on three sides by private land and on the south by Mason County Road 660N. Access to the area is from IL RT 97 or IL RT 29 by way of Mason County Road 710N, known locally as the Easton-Kilbourne Blacktop. Turn south at the intersection of Mason county Roads 710N and 2620E, and go ½ mile to Mason County Road 660N. Turn east on Mason County Road 660N and proceed ½ mile to a marked parking lot on the north side of the road. The parking lot is located on the natural area.
