Please join 4-H in learning the skills of Dog Showmanship during this one-day clinic hosted on Saturday, April 30th at the Rock Island County Fair Grounds (4200 Archer Dr, East Moline, IL 61244). This clinic is open to all 4-H members ages 8 to 18 who are approved in 4-H Online and have a Risk Form on file at your local office.

The cost for this all-day training is $5.

Please bring proof of rabies vaccination. Dog without a certified proof of rabies vaccination will be asked to leave the grounds.

Member will learn showmanship techniques from Sarah Close, a 24-year AKC showman who is experienced in handling multiple dog breeds. Members are more than welcome to bring their dogs for the hands-on portions of the day. If you plan to bring your dog, please bring a helper to watch/hold the dog during the classroom setting lessons. Please see below for a tentative schedule of the day:

  • 8:30-9:30 am – Check-in/Registration
  • 9:45 -10:15 am – Welcome/Introduction
  • 10:15-11:00 am – Proper Showing Attire
  • 11:00- 11:45 am – Dog Grooming
  • 11:45am - Q&A
  • 12:00-1:00pm - Lunch
  • 1:00 -1:30 pm Showmanship Patterns (Hands-on Group Work)
  • 1:30-2:30pm Hands-on Group Work
  • 2:30pm - Wrap Up/Q&A

Lunch –  We will break from noon to 1 pm for lunch. Please feel free to bring a sack lunch or there are several restaurants within 5 minutes from the fairgrounds. Some picnic tables will be available, but we recommend bringing a folding chair or any accommodations you may need. 

Public restrooms, a water hydrant, bottled water, and snacks will be provided throughout the day. Please dress for the weather, plan to be outside all day, and wear close-toed shoes. It will also be your responsibility to pick up after yourself and your dog throughout the clinic.

Members are asked to bring their dog with a choke chain and leash. It is recommended you use a different chain and lead for showmanship than what you use for obedience.
