This course is specific for food handlers in Illinois who work in non-restaurant food establishments, such as a nursing home, licensed day care, hospital, school, long-term facility, or retail food store.

What is the course about?

This food safety course is intended to help you learn about and implement food safety practices when handling food. The course is approved by the Illinois Department of Public Health and aims to meet food safety education needs for non-restaurant food handlers. Participants learn about the importance of food safety, food safety hazards, and the different ways the hazards can be reduced.

Who should attend?

Volunteers who help to serve food, such as at church events, community gatherings, soup kitchens, and food pantries. This course is also approved for food handlers working in a non-restaurant food establishment in Illinois, such as a nursing home, licensed day care, hospital, school, long-term facility, or retail food store. It is NOT approved for employees working in restaurants. It is also not intended for someone who has a valid Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) certificate.

What is the method of delivery?

This is a self-paced, online course. In-person or virtual courses may be offered in some areas of the state. More details about the course can be found on the course registration page.

How much time do I need to complete the course?

Plan to spend at least two hours.

Do you provide certificates to participants?

Yes. Certificates are given to all participants after completing the training, including the online course. Certificates are valid for 3 years.

Do we have to take an exam before we get the certificate?

No. There are no exams for this course.

Is there a cost associated with the course?

Yes. Unless you are an Illinois Extension employee or volunteer, there is a $5.00 fee to take the self-paced online course. In-person or virtual course costs may vary.
